He was the only one of the family to survive what Francois Maurois, in his introduction, calls the "human holocaust" of the persecution of the Jews, which began with the restrictions, the singularization of the yellow star, the enclosure within the ghetto, and went on to the mass deportations to the ovens of Auschwitz and Buchenwald. If they are not, it’s a brilliant satire.Įlie Wiesel spent his early years in a small Transylvanian town as one of four children. If the authors are serious, this is a silly, distasteful book. To ask why this is so would be a far more useful project. The world may be like this at times, but often it isn’t. We are told, for instance, to “be conspicuous at all cost,” then told to “behave like others.” More seriously, Greene never really defines “power,” and he merely asserts, rather than offers evidence for, the Hobbesian world of all against all in which he insists we live. While compelling in the way an auto accident might be, the book is simply nonsense. Quotations in the margins amplify the lesson being taught. Each chapter is conveniently broken down into sections on what happened to those who transgressed or observed the particular law, the key elements in this law, and ways to defensively reverse this law when it’s used against you. Each law, however, gets its own chapter: “Conceal Your Intentions,” “Always Say Less Than Necessary,” “Pose as a Friend, Work as a Spy,” and so on. These laws boil down to being as ruthless, selfish, manipulative, and deceitful as possible. This power game can be played well or poorly, and in these 48 laws culled from the history and wisdom of the world’s greatest power players are the rules that must be followed to win. We live today as courtiers once did in royal courts: we must appear civil while attempting to crush all those around us. The authors have created a sort of anti-Book of Virtues in this encyclopedic compendium of the ways and means of power.Įveryone wants power and everyone is in a constant duplicitous game to gain more power at the expense of others, according to Greene, a screenwriter and former editor at Esquire (Elffers, a book packager, designed the volume, with its attractive marginalia). Moore offers such vivid portraits of suffering that certain passages can be difficult to read, but this is an important story well told. A handful of physicians, public health investigators, and lawyers obtained some monetary awards for the victims, but the money was far from sufficient for adequate justice. Moore clearly separates the heroines from the villains throughout this deeply researched book, and she never masks her outrage. Later, when the toxicity had been documented, the employers blamed the women workers for careless use even though the women were observing workplace protocols. At first, the employers claimed that the radium was benign. The employers, as well as the scientists and physicians attending to the women, denied liability for the suffering and deaths. Many of the employees died while in their 20s and 30s after years of agonizing illnesses. Each one of them became sick from their piecework painting numerals on clock faces using a radium-infused radioactive substance that allowed the products to glow in the dark. Deciding to focus on the employers, the United States Radium Corporation in New Jersey and the Radium Dial Company in Illinois, Moore alternates chapters focusing on more than 15 women employed in Newark and a dozen women in Ottawa. She found two narrowly focused, quasi-academic books about the saga but nothing for general audiences. Eager to learn more, Moore traveled to the United States to research the deaths. British author Moore ( Felix the Railway Cat, 2017) takes a slice of ugly American history from nearly a century ago, telling a compelling narrative that could be ripped from recent headlines.Ī few years ago, while living in London, the author went online to search for “great plays for women,” and she found These Shining Lives, a play by Melanie Marnich about the radium poisonings and subsequent workplace-related deaths of factory employees, primarily in Ottawa, Illinois, and Newark, New Jersey, in the 1920s and 1930s.

Throughout his account he judiciously twists the lens between the longer view and the close-up shot of a man lighting a cigarette, or a painting of Donald Duck on a slide in a playground. Through it all, Seal gropes for an Anatolian identity that has persisted though so many changes of language and deity. They in turn take an interest in the author's phocine connection. These included the introduction of western surnames, a process Turks embraced with gusto – Seal meets a Mr Flag, a Mr Trueblueyed and a Mr Fearless. The disintegration of Ottoman hegemony after five centuries ushered in the modernisations of Ataturk. Seal is good on the forced assimilation of Christian Byzantines and Muslim Turks that played itself out during the Crusades, when both sides had to make compromises, living alongside one another in an era of tumultuous change. "The pressing question," writes Seal, "was how far the west might extend its influence inland into Asia before running into the torpid oriental headwind that traditionally blew there." The question presses still, though the wind is no longer torpid.īy the Byzantine millennium the once-great trade route up the Meander valley had lost out to more northerly passages. Migrants from southern Greece began to colonise the coastlands around the mouth of the Meander from the 10th century BC, calling the region Ionia and extending Hellenising tentacles. More than half of this book is historical, and Seal purveys his material with an even hand. The book is diligently researched, and Seal makes good use of travellers who have gone before him. But he backs up these assertions with sound evidence. Anatolia was "the cradle of western civilization it was the birthplace of history and philosophy, of Homer, Heraclitus and Herodotus, of coinage and town planning, and defining advances in medicine, mathematics and architecture". Unafraid of cliché, Seal makes bold claims for his region. Although most of the members of the MGT family have Mg transport activity as proven by functional complementation with yeast and bacteria mutants, their physiological roles in plants are largely different. MGT is the best-studied gene family of Mg 2+ transporter in plants ( Gebert et al., 2009 Saito et al., 2013). A CNGC family protein, AtCNGC10, has been indicated to mediate Mg 2+ influx, particularly in the root meristem and distal elongation zones ( Guo et al., 2010). OsHKT2 4 has the function of low-affinity Mg 2+ transporter in rice ( Zhang et al., 2017). MHX is a unique vacuolar Mg 2+ transporter in Arabidopsis ( Shaul et al., 1999). MHX (Mg 2+/H + Exchanger), HKT (High-Affinity K + Transport), CNGC (Cyclic Nucleotide-Gated Channel) and MGT (Magnesium Transporter) have been identified as Mg 2+ transporters in plants ( Shaul et al., 1999 Gebert et al., 2009 Tang and Luan, 2017 Zhang et al., 2017). In view of the unique chemical property and biological significance of Mg 2+, more and more studies have been conducted to gain understanding of the genetic and molecular mechanism of Mg 2+ uptake, translocation and distribution in plants ( Li et al., 2008 Hermans et al., 2013). Therefore, crop production problems caused by magnesium deficiency have gradually become important issues in agriculture. With the increase of crop yield and multi-cropping, Mg consumption leads to the lack of Mg in soil ( Rosanoff, 2013). Additionally, excessive application of high rates of K + andįertilizers antagonistically interfere with plant Mg uptake, thus enhances the risk of Mg deficiency ( Gransee and Führs, 2013). This unique chemical property makes Mg 2+ bind weakly to negative charged soil colloids and root cell walls, which leads to the loss of the exchangeable Mg easily from soil ( Aitken et al., 1999 Hermans et al., 2004). The only effective form of Mg absorption by plants is Mg 2+, which has the smallest ionic radius but the largest hydrated ionic radius in cations ( Maguire and Cowan, 2002). Lack of magnesium reduces the rate of photosynthesis and disrupts the distribution of carbohydrates from source to sink in plants, while inhibiting the growth of plant organs, eventually leading to a significant decrease in crop quality and productivity ( Aitken et al., 1999 Rissler et al., 2002 Verbruggen and Hermans, 2013). Mg is also a necessary element in carbohydrate partitioning ( Cakmak et al., 1994 Cakmak, 2013). The ionic form of magnesium (Mg 2+) is the most abundant divalent cation in plant cells, and its most prominent role may be its function as a central atom of chloroplast molecules in photosynthesis ( Rissler et al., 2002 Cakmak, 2013). Overexpression of LOC_Os03g04360 can significantly increase the Mg 2+ concentration in rice seedlings, especially under the condition of low Mg 2+ supply.Īs a key macronutrient, magnesium (Mg) plays an important role in plant growth, development and reproductive success ( Verbruggen and Hermans, 2013). Analysis of candidate genes in the region of qSMg3 and qTrMg3 through qRT-PCR, complementation assay in the yeast Mg 2+ transport-defective mutant CM66, and sequence analysis of the parental lines suggested that LOC_Os03g04360 may play important roles in Mg 2+ uptake, translocation and accumulation in rice. qSMg3 and qTrMg3 might be the same, since they are very close to each other on chromosome 3. Two QTLs ( qTrMg3 and qTrMg8) were found to affect the translocation of Mg 2+ from the roots to the shoots, and explained 10.91% and 9.63% of phenotypic variation. Three QTLs ( qSMg3, qSMg7 and qSMg10) were detected for the shoot Mg 2+ concentration, which explained 4.30-5.46% of the phenotypic variation. The Mg 2+ transporter gene, OsMGT1, was within the region of qRMg1. Four QTLs ( qRMg1, qRMg2, qRMg7 and qRMg8) were detected for the root Mg 2+ concentration, which explained 11.45-13.08% of the phenotypic variation. We used a multi-parent advanced generation inter-cross (MAGIC) population constructed using four parental lines and genotyped by a 55 K rice SNP array for association analysis to locate QTLs related to Mg 2+ uptake and translocation in rice at the seedling stage. Rice is an important food crop in the world, but there are few studies on the uptake and translocation of Mg 2+ in rice. Magnesium (Mg) is an essential element for plant growth and development. * UPDATE* her NEW 2 week challenge does have warm-ups and cool downs. For cooling down, I took the small loop around our neighborhood every time. Maybe some arm circles, calf raises, and moves like that as well. If you do the challenge, I highly recommend doing a few laps around your yard, up and down your drive way, or around the space you’re in to warm up your body a bit. Which usually ends on a high intensity move as well. And then when the video ends that’s it, you’re down. When you start the workout videos you immediately go right into the high intensity exercises. With this Chole Ting 2 Week Shred Challenge there is no mention ever of warming up or cooling down. No Warm Up/Cool Down: Another thing that could lead to injuries is not warming up and/or cooling down appropriately. So often times I did the HIIT workout every other day or did high impact one day and low impact the other just to work things a little differently. Which IS NOT recommended to do on back to back days. With the same two workouts every day you’re constantly working the exact same muscles. I myself suffered a little injury under my left arm and also had to switch up workouts a bit to keep from overworking certain muscles. Injuries Could Easily Happen: Due to the con listed above ( workouts are repetitive) I believe injuries could very easily happen! Especially if these exercises or working out in general is newer to you. I found myself dreading the workouts some morning because I was purely tired of doing the same thing! Which is kind of crazy since it was only 14 days but I think that shows you how repetitive they are. They’re basically your base workouts and additional workouts are added most days. Workouts Are Repetitive: The workouts are sooooo repetitive! Every day you are doing two of the same workouts. Lots of workout videos leave out low impact modifications or simply do not include the option of doing so – so this is truly a big positive of Chloe’s workout videos. This protected my knee and kept it from getting overworked too much ( more on this below). I found myself varying between doing high impact and the low impact modifications every other day. Low Impact/Modifications: As someone with a weak knee, I love that Chloe includes low impact modifications for most of the high impact moves. The perfect amount of time to fit in the workout before or after work. Maxing out your workout time at 45 minutes. Each day you do two to four separate videos. Length of Workouts: Every individual video is only 10-13 minutes long for the workout. This allows you be prepared when it is time to move on to the next exercise, rather than playing catch up which happens with so many workout videos. I also love that Chloe shows the next move while the count down for the current move is going. Workout Videos: There is a video for every workout and they are very well made! With timers for each exercise, a count down, and a percentage of completion for the workout as you go along. The length makes it very easy to commit to and try out a challenge for the first time or to spice up your at home workouts! It also included a couple of active rest days for you to take off or enjoy something like a walk or yoga. Only Two Weeks: I LOVED that the challenge was only two weeks long! Wasn’t as overwhelming or hard to stick to as a 30 day or month long program can be. Including what I found to be pros and cons of the challenge as well as my results.Ĭhloe Ting 2 Week Shred Challenge HONEST Review Pros/likes So today I am diving into a very honest reviewof the Chloe Ting 2 Week Shred Challenge. After completing, I polled my instagram following ( which hopefully includes you!) and found that 100% wanted a review of the program. So I committed to the two week challenge and shared a bit of the journey on Instagram. For several weeks tried out various workout videos – mainly due to the fact that they were a quick 10-20 minutes and challenging. I found this program after partaking in a couple of Chloe’s workout videos via YouTube. Over the last two weeks I took part in the Chloe Ting 2 Week Shred Challenge. The control wheel controlled the pitch and the steering of the aircraft, both on the ground and in the air, simplifying control and coordinated turning and eliminating the need for rudder pedals. A two-control system linked the rudder and aileron systems, which controlled yaw and roll, with the steerable nosewheel. Lacking rudder pedals, the Ercoupe was flown using only the control wheel. The prototype 310 featured an ERCO-made inverted four-cylinder engine, the ERCO I-L 116, which was quickly dropped due to its high manufacturing cost compared to the new four-cylinder Continental A-65 air-cooled boxer engine. The easy-to-fly design included unique design features, including a large glazed canopy - with almost as much visibility as a bubble canopy - for improved visibility. The ERCO 310, which included a fully cowled engine, made its first flight in October 1937 at College Park Airport and was soon renamed the "Ercoupe". Retaining the tricycle gear for ease of maneuvering on the ground, and limited stall-spin features, Weick switched to a low-wing monoplane configuration in his new model, powered by an engine in tractor configuration.Īn Erco 415 Ercoupe showing its double tail configuration Focusing his efforts on a number of design issues, primarily simplicity and safety, Weick strove to create a reasonably priced aircraft that would not stall or spin. Weick left NACA in 1936 and joined Engineering and Research Corporation's (ERCO) fledgling aircraft team as chief designer, primarily to continue improving his aircraft design. After the prototype W-1 underwent a forced landing, an updated W-1A was built by Fairchild, incorporating leading edge cuffs. The W-1 was not intended for production to qualify as a competitor, but was purchased by the Bureau for continued experimental tests in spin-control safety. Two other winners were the Waterman Aeroplane and a roadable autogyro, the Autogiro Company of America AC-35. In 1936 the winner of the competition was the Stearman-Hammond Y-1, incorporating many of the safety features of the W-1. In 1934, the Bureau of Air Commerce approached Weick's team looking for standards for a competition for a safe and practical $700 aircraft. Weick and a group of co-workers designed and assembled the experimental aircraft with a group of his colleagues who worked on the project in their spare time and paid for it themselves. In 1934 he asked permission to build an aircraft based on the 1931 Stout Skycar, using fabric instead of aluminum covering, and control modifications based on NACA research. In 1931, aeronautical engineer Fred Weick was assistant chief of the aeronautics division of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA). It is shown in March 1934 in NACA's full scale wind tunnel. Fred Weick designed the W-1 with tricycle landing gear. The reaction, much to her surprise, was nothing short of glorious. Unlike some actors who shield themselves from the internet chatter, MacDowell can’t help but tune in. “I was scared that people would be mean,” she says, her voice filling with vulnerability. She waited nearly a full year, until July 2021, to debut her new look, on the Cannes red carpet. Last August, MacDowell joined their ranks. His daylong, trompe l’oeil technique of painting silver onto older sections of dyed hair enabled the transitions of Jane Fonda and Sharon Osbourne (and whose work inspired my own jump). Determined, the actor booked an appointment with Jack Martin, the famed Tustin, California, colorist. MacDowell works in an industry that puts a premium on beauty, and by beauty I mean youth, and she was jeopardizing her livelihood. “And then when COVID happened and I saw the roots coming in, I thought it suited me.” “I’d been wanting to do it for a few years,” she says of embracing her natural salt and pepper. It made her feel uncomfortable - and so began what would balloon into an every-three-weeks coloring habit. MacDowell, who is 63 and has been a L’Oréal brand ambassador for an impressive 35 years, didn’t start coloring her hair until she was about 40, when she caught a journalist clocking her silvers during an interview. Off-White c/o Virgil Abloh coat, Tiffany & Co. “But I’ve been selling hair color for a long time,” she says, letting loose a dark cackle. “How old are you?” MacDowell asks and calculates that it took her 20 years beyond my age to break up with her dye bottle. “It looks really good.” Her tone suggests that we’re old friends in fact, many of my old friends have not had the nerve to bring up my no-longer-raven hair in conversation. “You’re growing your silver out,” she says. Her eyebrows pitch in that way they sometimes do in the movies, like a roof in a child’s drawing of a house. Her back is turned to me, and the slant of her body lets me know that she is exhausted from a full day of being poked and posed for the photographs accompanying this article. Many celebrities would have been long gone, but I find MacDowell waiting in a featureless room with no windows. This theory is put to the unfortunate test when I, having plugged in the wrong address into my Lyft app (right Hollywood studio, wrong location), show up 57 minutes late for our interview. With her big curly mane, gentle South Carolina twang, and that full-barreled laugh that sounds a second away from breaking into a snort, MacDowell has never, despite her more than three decades as an American icon, quite managed to stop seeming gracious and down to earth. The mission of Andy's company is "to serve as a powerful catalyst for entrepreneurs to experience extraordinary success in business and life.” To help clients achieve this transformation, he applies organizational change and innovation strategies to individual lives. Why change when we don’t need to? Because when things are going well, it might be the best time to start thinking about changes.Īndy McDowell, of Generate Your Value, stops by the Experience by Design studios to talk about how self-transformation is the key to making transformative experiences. Change can be even more difficult when things seem to be going well. When it comes down to making changes, where the rubber hits the proverbial road and orgs have to consider resourcing, people, budgets and time horizons, the reality of what it takes to change runs up against actual desire to change. Organizations may often think of change, but they are also often not serious about actually changing. If you’re looking for something to hold your keys, rather than something to add to your keys, Gerber recently introduced the amusingly named Mullet multitool. I’ve carried a Shard for more than 5 years now and I can’t count how many times it’s saved the day by being on my keys. There’s an oversized hole for the key ring, and small amounts of jimping on the top and bottom to give you a solid grip on the tool. The two tines are large and small sized straight screwdrivers, and the notch of the nail puller can also serve as a wire stripper (and can cut strings in a pinch.) The middle of the body houses an angled bottled opener (a must have for any tool!) and the rear includes a built in Philips screw driver. It offers a lot of functions in a small size (2.75” long, 0.6 ounce weight) and for almost no money ($7 for the black anodized version.) At the front you have a pry bar/nail puller with a decent angle to maximize what leverage you can attain. It’s probably the only keychain multitool most people need, but it’s not perfect. Get it? Shard, like part of an Artifact? Anyway, the Artifact was a huge failure but everyone wanted a Shard, so it wound up in production. The Shard was originally a promo “giveaway” item handed out for free at trade shows, never actually distributed. To say the Artifact was terrible was an understatement, as any tool that has the propensity for injuring the person carrying it is – the little X-ACTO blade liked to open up when you weren’t expecting it, slicing legs and fingers and hands galore. Years ago, Gerbercame out with a keychain multitool called the Artifact that they believed was going to be “the next big thing.” It had a similar form factor to the Shard, but included a folding utility knife with a basic liner lock. All of these are winners, but maybe you’ll find something that fits your use profile closely here. After some deep-dive research, we’ve narrowed the list down to a top ten plus one bonus option for keychain tools that will make your life a little easier. So sorting out which keychain multitools are actually worth a damn and which are junk is a tall task. That’s likely because impulse buys are common (the low price and gift-ability makes these enticing ‘why not’ purchases) and development costs are (relatively) low. There’s a lot of competition and a steady wave of new products coming out in this field. But what’s the best when it comes to keychain multitools? So a multitool that can attach to your keys without weighing you down ends up being one of the most useful tools you can buy, because you’ll actually end up having it on you and using it when you need it. That’s where keychain multitools come in.Ĭhances are, if you’re awake and have on clothes, you’ve got your keys with you. What about tools you’ll actually carry? It’s been said that the best tool for a job is the one you actually have on you, rather than the one that’s sitting back at home on a shelf when you actually need it. The Leatherman MUT EOD is great for when you need to diffuse a bomb, but it weighs around 12 ounces with a sheath and can be used as a paperweight in a pinch. They’re big, heavy, ungainly, and sometimes impractical. Some modern multitools are paramount to carrying a toolbox that folds into a single block of metal. There’s endless discussion about what sophisticated multitool is the most useful. For a fee you may also choose to use additional delivery and tracking.
